Cope
- The
early history of the Cope can be traced variously to the lacerna,
the Byrrus, the Pluvival, parents of the Cappa Nigra. The Cappa
Nigra was (and still is) worn as an outdoor garment by the clergy
and was originally without liturgical significance. By the eighth
century the Cope began to travel along the same path of development
as other Vestments; better quality materials, including silks, were
used and colors were gradually introduced. The Cope symbolizes the
Shepherds covering of the sheep from its nakedness and exposure.
